How to judge linen quality
Thread count (TC)
The number of threads in one square inch of fabric. Higher feels smoother; 250–300 TC balances feel, durability and price for most hotels.
GSM
Grams per square metre: the weight of a towel or fabric. Heavier towels feel plusher and absorb more, but take longer to dry and wash.
Fabric & weave
Cotton breathes and softens with washing. Poly-cotton resists creases and shrinkage and lasts longer. Percale is crisp; sateen has a soft sheen.
Finish & stitching
Check double-stitched hems, shrinkage after the first wash and colour fastness. These decide how linen looks after months of daily use.
